  2. This is awesome! "Save a copy" should help with the eternal naming convention problem like 'final image" "final final image" final final image 01" 'this was the final image' 😀

  3. Matt K, did a video showing that you can also use Export in the File menu to save a JPEG, the removal of the JPEG from the Save As area is a minor inconvenience, but we can get used to it over time. It is different that Adobe did remove something from their software.

  4. I think "save a copy" keeps saving simultaneously as changes are being made. Whereas "Save As" saves changes when we "save" the changes manually. (Only a guess, don't shoot at me for this). Make a copy might be a precautionary method in case of power loss or something.

  5. Hi! Something happened to the filtering options in Library module in Lightroom? Was on the top, now has disappeared. Am I missing something? Thanks!

  6. Thank you Anthony for this. I JUST set up a friend today with her machine upgrading from CS5…yup….I know. Didn't run to swell on Mojavi, nope, but it did for awhile. This vid will help me in teaching her some of your workflow and will get her to subscribe tomorrow…boy she needs you. She is a great photographer/artist.

  7. I don't use Photoshop much for photography (gasp!), but I do use it to create backgrounds for paper crafting, which means lots of filters. Save as a copy will make it easier for me NOT to overwrite the original source as I go through various iterations. Your demo helps me understand which file Photoshop is showing me as I work, so thanks!

  8. It seems to me that the big difference between Save As and Save a Copy, is that with Save As, when you continue working you are in the new file, but with Save a Copy, you carry on working in the old file. (And perhaps you could use it, therefore, to save your work up to a certain stage, as a snapshot after doing some work and so that you can readily go back to that stage if you don't like the outcome of what you do next. Or if you have more than one idea for what you want to do after your basic adjustments, you can have more than one branch of possibilities by saving a copy.)

  9. So there's nothing new in the update?

With the likes of Luminar and Topaz, it won't be lonmg before I cancel my subscription because Abobe are so far behind.

I'm not sure if this update video does you any favours Anthony.

  10. Thanks for today's video. I find the Save a Copy function to be a nuisance. Once I finished editing, I would "Save As" and save a jpg with the same name. However, "jpg" is no longer an option with "Save As". And, "Save a Copy" adds "copy" to the file name. Little nuisance, nothing major.

  11. The change to Save and Save As is to save only in formats allowed by the image. I.e. if the image has layers it can only be saved as a PSD, PSB or TIFF. If you want to save it as a JPG, which does not support layers or 16 bit, you now have to Save a Copy.

That change was apparently dictated by Apple as part of their OS revisions which is what Adobe uses, as do all software programs, to provide the Open and Save dialog boxes. But to keep the operation consistent across platforms, Adobe has changed the Windows version of Photoshop as well. So the change forces people to alter a decade’s old habit and to now save images using a different command if they want to save as a JPG.

But a better method has always been to Export, where the image can also be resized and changed to sRGB color space at the same time, steps usually needed anyway when saving as a JPG for the web. There’s even a Quick Export as JPG you can set up with parameters to your liking. A tutorial on how best to save for web use out of PS might be in order!

Old-guard PS users still use outdated methods and habits they’ve used for decades and object to anything changing!

  12. Hello and thank you for this. For me, the most significant aspect of 'save a copy' as opposed to 'save as' is that it seems to be the only way we can now choose from the FULL list of file extensions. We used to be able to do this with 'save as' but it would appear that this is no longer the case and only works with the new 'save a copy' option. I must admit, I do find that a little frustrating!
