  1. Hi!! I love these videos they help so much but honestly the key signatures are so confusing to me, I struggle so much to know when to stretch my fingers and everything… idk maybe its just me 😅

  2. You have been the best instructor to follow picking up the violin early this year. I purchased the first song book, and i knew it was going to be a mountain to climb, but damn I didn't think Everest was going to be thrown at me right away. Not sure if you follow up on comments from older videos, but is their any chance you could put out a songbook with songs that are more beginner like? I can't imagine novices feel confident learning to play songs that already incorporate vibrato when that alone is a skill that I guess people don't master, maybe not even that but can do that comfortably right off the back, then again I am speaking for myself. I'm trudging along, it would be nice to be able to learn more pieces that are more common, like a rendition of happy birthday or maybe you put notes to nursery rhymes. Then again, I am armed with the basic knowledge of reading sheet music, so maybe it's something I can do on my end. Thanks for all your hard work, you look beautiful doing it effortlessly!

  3. Hello! I love Leaving for the last time, but I'm kind of checking to see if I'm playing it right. I watched this video about it and I get the Eb and Bb, but if it's the Bb major scale does that mean that we also have our second fingers back for the F on the D string and the F on the E string?

  4. So here's the thing. I just spent six weeks going through Alison's first ten lessons and all the exercises. one to two hours a day squeaking and scratching on open strings, first finger, second finger and finally 3/4 finger notes. Finally, I got through the final exercise reasonably well and I bought the song book as my reward. Finally! Let's play some music. The point of all this is: I was able to sight read the first two pieces! I was totally surprised at how easily I was able to pick up the first two pieces. Not great – I still have a lot of work to do with intonation and string crossings. But, after going through the exercises and diligently following Alison's instructions, I was able to sight read and play two pieces on the violin in a recognizable form. Her method *works*. I am one happy student.

  5. Hi alison, at start i would thank you for your support by your various videos.

I startet last week with Song book 1 and would give a little feedback from a students point of view:

Your performance and Tips helps a lot but i think your performance should only contains techniques which are told in lessons before. F. e. you use often vibrato. The Sound is obviously great but as a student i wish to hear it like i should play it for a better reference.

I hope you don't get me wrong. Your tutorials and the selection are great. Because ode to joy is slow i recognized that i should improve my bow control because my slow C (third finger on G) sounds very inconsistent.

Thank you, and i look foreward to my progresdion 😊

  6. Im a little confused when to play sharp or natural on the second finger in song book 1. In Blue Danube for example in the very first bar – is that second note an F# (so close to the third finger?). Im thinking its always # (so second finger back towards the third) unless the note specifically has something to denote a natural next to it?

  7. Are the fingerings in these songs way too fast for anyone else? I’ve followed the lessons so far but a little frustrated that my left had can’t move fast enough

  8. Hey, Allison, I am really enjoying your lessons. I’ve worked through the entire book now. My question is how to get the songs to flow nicely instead of each note sounding kind of stilted and not flowing into the next. Thank you so much!

  9. I don't know if this is a silly question or covered in other videos, but if you have a string crossing and you're using the same finger (example: playing G on the D string with 3rd finger and next immediately playing C on the G string) are you still using your 3rd finger and switching over quickly, and you get better with time and practice? Or do you use your 3rd finger for one and shift so your 2nd finger plays the other note?

  10. Hello Allison I texted on another tutorial that I would purchase your Book 1. Thanks to you, I have discovered my skillset level for violin. Actually, I am a beginner intermediate player. Some of the songs I know by ear and can play them. Others I read the music and play on my violin. I'm a little rusty, but once I get going….Thank You so Much! I will purchase your other materials in the near future.

  11. Hi Allison
I started playing the violin a month ago and have started learning “leaving for a last time”. But mine just doesn’t sound anything like yours, even though I put my finger where it needs to be for the flats. Please advice what should I do to get an intonation as good as yours.
    Thanks

  12. Hi, I have been playing for 1 month and have a few questions. I finish the first 10 lessons and I'm starting the fourth song of songbook 1. The things I want to ask are that whenever I play fast notes I get a whispery sound. That happens also a lot on the G string. It's not because of rosin because in the other strings sounds very good. I can do short notes that sound good but with a very shy and short bow. So, I was wondering, is there a way to play short notes and the G string? Does every string have a different way to be played?

  13. Hey Alison,

I'm currently working on this song. I have a question to the bow hold. I practiced bowing a lot next to your lessons and it got much smoother… Unfortunately my pinky lifted up and I've been told it should NEVER leave the bow, otherwise I will have huge problems with harder pieces. Now I see it in your video that your pinky is not on the bow either.

I feel much smoother and lighter when I can use my fingers more free. With my pinky on the bow it feels much more stiff.

  14. Hi Alison, thank you for this amazing book. I have been playing from the book for a couple of weeks now and am currently learning March. I don't have any problem with the bowing or the left hand fingering but I have trouble playing the pieces correctly in one go. Even at reduced speeds I screw up at some place or the other and have to start over. Any insights on this would be helpful.

  15. 23 year old beginner here! I'm about 1 month in and wholeheartedly adore you Alison. I'm currently working on mastering all songs in your Song Book 1, and I have a question about Minuet in G. In measure 20, the first note is C sharp, and I understand why it's denoted as such (since C by default is natural according to our key signature) – what about the 3rd note in this measure? It looks like a C natural since it's not denoted as a sharp, but when I play C natural it sounds wrong… is it C natural or C sharp? Do you only indicate sharps once at the beginning of a measure? If so, how would you indicate a C natural that follows a C sharp within the same measure?

  16. Hi allison, thanks so much for these free lessons, if i stick with it and progress too lesson 11-20 i will become a patreon. Can i ask how long it takes practising everyday for an hour or so to finally connect brain fingers and notes on paper with violin. Im not moving on till it has sunk in but as an adult learner boy my head is rusty and stubborn at learning. Thanks

  17. Been playing for now for about 3 months… working on Gypsy firelight. Once I master that I'm getting your complete collection…… thank you sooooooo much for putting this all together and your free content… my wife commented last night that she can hear the improvement in my practicing. Couldn't have done it without you!!!!… you online student from Ohio, USA

  18. Hi Alison, I have finally moved from Country Gardens to March and WOW what a change lol It is so hard! You mention this piece has some scale runs and I noticed lesson 11 is on scales so do you recommended starting lesson 11 at this time to help with these pieces or just continuing with song book 1 until I can play all of it more or less confidently and well?

  19. Hey Alison. I feel like my hands are way smaller than yours. When you use your fourth finger although you stretch it i see that you are on point. What I mean is that my e’s dont sound like the open e string. In fact all my 4 finger notes dont sound smoothly. I feel discourage but then I see these 10-12 year olds playing well. Is it possible to not have muscian hands?

  20. What do 🎶 these and the upside down crescent moon with the dot indicate? By the way thx for the videos & time u spend on us students❤️. Also u shake ur fingers is it necessary(for us beginners cause I find it hard)??
